IRONMAN triathlete crossing the finish line of the run

The run is the final leg of an IRONMAN: a full 26.2-mile marathon (13.1 miles at IRONMAN 70.3) after a long day of swimming and cycling. The right gear keeps you comfortable and moving when it counts, so use the checklist below to pack smart, then focus on training and racing. New to the run leg? Quick Gear Decisions

A couple of choices make the run more comfortable. Here is the short version.

Which running shoes?
Get fitted at a run store to match your gait: neutral shoes for an efficient stride, stability shoes for mild overpronation, and cushioned shoes for soaking up long miles. Train in the pair you plan to race, so nothing feels new on race day.

Carbon-plated shoes for the run?
They can add spring and save energy late in the marathon, and they are allowed to race in. They are optional and best tested in training first, and you should confirm any shoe rules in your Athlete Guide.

Match the shoe to your gait, and race in what you trained in.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the IRONMAN run?
The run is a full 26.2-mile (42.2 km) marathon in a full IRONMAN and a 13.1-mile (21.1 km) half marathon at IRONMAN 70.3. It is the final leg, after the swim and the bike.

What shoes should I wear for an IRONMAN run?
Wear the road running shoes that fit your gait and feel good on long runs, whether neutral, stability, or cushioned. Get fitted at a run store, and always race in a pair you have trained in.

Do I need carbon-plated shoes?
No. They can add spring and save energy over 26.2 miles and are allowed to race in, but they are optional. Test them in training first, and confirm any shoe rules in your Athlete Guide.

What is a race belt?
An elastic belt that holds your race bib on the front so it stays visible while you run. Many also have loops to carry gels and salt tabs, and it lets you keep your bib off your tri suit.

Do I wear my tri suit for the run?
Yes. Your triathlon suit is worn under your wetsuit for the swim and stays on through the bike and the run, so there is no full change in transition.
